Bonsor Park Recreation Center
Burnaby, BC
The design of Bonsor Park Recreation Centre succeeded in providing an exceptionally numerous and varied collection of facilities within a single, attractive, compact structure. The completed facility is welcoming, unobtrusive, and refreshing in appearance, its components are well integrated, comfortable, well organized, and flexible, and the Centre has proven to be extremely popular with the community at large and all who make use of the facilities. The facilities at Bonsor Park are comprehensive, distinctive, and of first-rate quality. They include a 37 m, 6-lane indoor pool with an adjacent leisure component (whirlpool, learner's pool, saunas); a 19,000 square foot Gym/Sports Hall that is designed for maximum flexibility; and Multi-purpose rooms, a fitness centre, social facilities, plus squash/racquet courts and childcare facilities. The feature that distinguishes the design of Bonsor Centre is its compactness. While the desired programme included a multitude of components, the community was adamant in wanting to preserve as much open space as possible around the building. Our design team met the challenge and produced a concept that provides all the facilities wanted by the community in the most condensed structure possible. Our Design Approach for Bonsor Park Recreation Centre, as with all of our public projects, was based upon obtaining a thorough understanding of the needs and sensibilities of the client, the various user groups, and the surrounding community. Only then did we set about to translate those concerns into designed forms. As the design was developed, we sought verification from these groups at key points to ensure that our designs conformed to their aspirations. Bonsor Park is a particularly successful example of our collaborative approach to the design of recreational facilities. It has met and indeed exceeded the hopes of those who played a part in its realization.
