Performing Arts Expansion, York House School
Vancouver, B.C.
This expansion was required even though there was virtually no room on the site to accommodate it. It was decided to place the 355 seat Performance Theatre, The music Studios, Multi-purpose space, a 30 stall addition to the underground parking, office space for the Alumni, Administration and Admissions, below the existing playfield. The new facilities and Junior School are tied to the Alexandra Street drop-off entrance by a below-grade mall which is day-lit by a continuous skylight and opening into a sunken amphitheatre gives the lower floor a light and bright atmosphere.
This facility connects the existing Junior School with the existing and replacement Senior School which is the next project proposed and already designed. This project included expansion of the existing Gymnasium making it more suitable for both Senior and Junior activities. As the theatre development is now below the existing playfield it was decided to replace the field with an all-weather surface. New landscaping including wrought iron fencing provide an attractive setting this well established community.
