Cellulosic Ethanol Plant for Lignol Laboratories
Burnaby, B.C.
This Laboratory was relocated from the Research Park at U.B.C. to occupy approximately half of a former Air Care Centre that has now become part of the BCIT campus in Burnaby. It includes new research offices, a Bio-conversion Lab, an Analytic Lab, and a larger process Lab that is used as a Pilot Plant to test commercial processes.
Lignol, the by-product of a process to create alcohol from wood-pulp, has become valuable in its own right. Lab pollutants from these processes are considered to be minor. The building, as far as possible, is contained within the former envelope. Some additional roof equipment was screened to the satisfaction of the City of Burnaby and BCIT. This lab is part of a BCIT initiative to encourage College-Industry cooperative ventures. It encourages sustainable initiatives common to the rest of the campus
